Disk Defragmenter
Every time data is added or removed from the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) there is potential for the files to become fragmented. This fragmentation causes the system to have to search throughout the HDD to resolve requests for files, folders and programs. The searching to reconstruct the fragmented data results in delays, a slower system. Routinely perform disk defragmentation to preserve the performance of your computer.

Disk Defragmenter presents itself differently in Vista than in XP. The process is the same however; the images shown here are the XP version.

After opening the Disk Defragmenter program you have the opportunity to analyze any partitions on the system.

Click on the partition of choice and click Analyze (when you select analyze a recommendation as to defrag or not is provided).

Click on Defragment to start the defragmentation process. The top bar shows the fragmented state and the bottom bar shows the progress of the defragmentation. When the process is completed, you can review a report of the defragmentation process. Click Close to complete the process.
