Common Computer Fixes May Cause More Trouble

Let’s face it, everyone has had a computer that runs slow or seems to have a gremlin running the system.  Some of us have had the whole thing crash and lose data that was priceless.  Most computer problems fall into three main categories.  Viruses, Ad-Ware and Spy-Ware cause slowing and security issues, Hard Disk Drive issues that can steal your productivity or valuable data, and upgrades that effect compatibility in the system.   There are some simple things that you can do to help keep your computer humming along at the speed of; well ,you.

Viruses, Ad-Ware and Spy-Ware are the buzz at the office and gatherings.  They corrupt information and programs, add meaningless data to your files, and attach commands that you don’t want.  There are a number of software titles out there to combat this problem but they often cause of more trouble than the help and protection they are intended to provide.  Many of these software products are downloaded from the internet (right where you received the trouble in the first place) and some are installed by our computer literate friends just trying to lend a hand.  Many users still having problems with their machine will download multiple Anti-Virus and Spy-Ware products in an attempt to rectify their issues and all that happens is that the software works against each other slowing your system even more.  This will send your otherwise reliable computer into a flurry of activity as each product tries to clean up the other.  Kenneth Goldberg with KenputerGuru recommends using a single full service Anti-Virus package; like Norton Antivirus or One Care from Microsoft, to keep your computer running and the little buggers out.
Some users find that they are running slow and then get failure notices.  After many attempts to clean up the machine, they are still no better off.  The Hard Disk Drive may be the culprit here.  Do a Disk Cleanup (from your start menu select All Programs, Accessories, System Tools) and perform a routine Disk Defragment (located in the system tools) to help smooth out the operation.  Sometimes these self helps aren’t enough and you may need to seek a professional.  They will clean your machine of all the nasty’s and check the hard drive for problems and optimize the system so that it runs like new.  You will get your machine back with the same look and all of your data in place. Ken cautions, always use a certified professional.

All of us will face upgrades. Hardware is the parts of your machine that make it work. Software is the programs like outlook that are loaded into your machine to do the things you need to do. Both will require an upgrade at one time or another.  Software upgrades are available online from the companies that make that title that you use.  Hardware upgrades should be done by a professional and requires purchasing components to be placed into your machine.  Use extreme caution when purchasing hardware and take care that the upgrade you purchase is compatible with your system.

If you have any questions Ken is offering his expertise as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer for free through his company’s web site. If you have a problem or a question regarding your computer hardware, software or peripherals (printers, scanners, etc) do not hesitate to visit www.kenputerguru.com and click the contact page, there you can submit a question and Ken will respond with an answer promptly after receiving your correspondence.
